How to Get a Car Title if You’ve Lost or Misplaced it
One of the great things about car title loans is how easy it is to apply (and be approved!) for one. As long as you have a drivable vehicle with a title in your name, you can get a short-term loan from Select Title Loans. In terms of documentation, all you need is a photo ID and a copy of your car’s title. With this in hand, title loans in Alabama are within your reach.
Of course, you get to keep your car even if you have a loan taken out against it, and when the loan is repaid, you get your car title document back. This makes a car title loan a flexible, fast, convenient option.
A hurdle our customers often come across is finding a copy of their car title. Since it’s not something you often need, it’s easy to misplace it, or forget where you put it last. Thankfully, it’s possible to get a duplicate of your car title in Alabama from the Alabama Department of Revenue (DOR). In recent years, the DOR has upgraded its online system so you can get your duplicate car title over the internet, making it easier than ever.
How to Get a Car Title in Alabama
When you buy a car in Alabama or bring a vehicle into the state, it needs to be registered with the government. You can register your title at the MVTRIP Public Title Portal.
If you buy a car from a private party, the seller must complete the title assignment on the title certificate. They’ll give you a bill of sale, and you must pay a fee to the county license plate issuing office.
If you’re transferring a car into Alabama, the process is similar, but you must bring the vehicle to the office. If the state you’re coming from doesn’t require car titles, the vehicle registration certification works as proof of ownership for your registration.
If you purchased your vehicle from a dealership, they should have given you the car title and registered the vehicle for you.
How to Apply for a Duplicate Car Title in Alabama
As mentioned previously, car titles in Alabama are issued through the DOR. You can replace your title in person, or by using the Motor Vehicle Title Registration & Insurance Portal (MVTRIP).
To use the online system, select the option to Request Vehicle Records. Then select Private Party and hit continue. You’ll be asked whether you’re the vehicle owner, or whether you need a copy of the car title for insurance, court, or investigative reasons. Choose Vehicle Owner and click continue.
Next, you’ll be asked for your personal details such as your name, driver’s license number, and address. You’ll then be asked for details on the vehicle and supporting documentation. Finally, you’ll get a receipt.
You must wait for the application request to be approved before making payment. You can check the request status of your duplicate car title application on the website. Once your request has been approved and payment has been made, you can download the duplicate car title directly from the website.
If you would instead prefer to request a duplicate car title in person, you can do so by visiting your local county license plate issuing office. Sometimes, replacement titles are also available from qualifying banks and credit unions.
More About Your Car Title
A car title is a record of who owns a vehicle. Since a vehicle can have significant value, the car title can also show whether the car is collateral for a loan. Most cars from a new car dealership are sold with financing. Technically, this means that when you drive that brand new car off the showroom lot, it belongs to the company that financed its purchase for you. The car title will show a lien, which is essentially saying that if you cannot make the repayment on your vehicle, then the lender has the right to repossess the car.
Short-Term Loans and Car Title Loans in Alabama
Once you’ve paid off your car, the lien is removed, and you’re in a financially powerful position. You own an asset outright that has significant value. Though most banks and lenders are uninterested in offering loans against this type of collateral, car title loan providers recognize that, because you own a car, there is less risk in lending money to you. This usually means that you can get a much larger loan sum from a car title loan than you would from a personal loan. Sometimes, because the risk is lower, the interest payments will also be less, meaning that a car title loan may be the most financially smart option to choose if you need a short-term loan.
If you’re lucky enough to own your vehicle outright, then Select Title Loans in Florence, AL is here to help you get the fast cash you need. All you need is your car title and a valid photo ID. You can drive away with your car in as little as 20 minutes, cash in hand. Get started by giving us a call, or filling out our online application.
